Is it IBS or IBD?

Dr. Kate Kresge

IBS and IBD are not the same thing.

IBS stands for irritable bowel syndrome, a functional GI disorder that does not result in physical changes to the GI tract on imaging. IBD, by contrast, stands for inflammatory bowel disease, which is associated with body-wide inflammation and damage to the colon.

Both can lead to bowel symptoms, but they are treated completely differently.

Getting an IBD / IBS diagnosis wrong could mean receiving the wrong treatment, which could keep you sick.

Thankfully, there are some easy ways to tell if you have IBS or IBD.

I cover diagnosis and treatment of IBS and IBD in this comprehensive article that I wrote for RUPA Health practitioners and patients.
